Active travelers trust National Geographic to deliver what they want in a guidebook expert advice, insider tips, and the cultural feel of each destination not easily found online. These guides are pitch-perfect for today's experiential travel enthusiasts who want an authentic, enriching immersion.
From the heart of Auckland and Christchurch to the lakes around Queenstown; from the fjords of Milford Sound to towering Mt. Cook on the South Island; and from the beautiful Bay of Islands to the bubbling sulfur springs of Rotorua in the North, this guide gives you every tool you need to plan a trip to this unique land on the other side of the world. Australian native and frequent Kiwi visitor Peter Turner escorts you through the incredibly varied land- and cityscapes that are today's New Zealand. Starting with a detailed introduction to the country's history, food, land, and culture, the book explores every corner of New Zealand, starting with Auckland, the bustling cosmopolitan jewel in the North. Turner takes readers down the islands to such magical places as Kiakoura, where you can swim with wild dolphins; stately Wellington, the proud and lively capital; Westland National Park, with its incredible gleaming glaciers; and charming Christchurch, whose gardens and parks give it a distinctly British feel. Special sidebars describe such topics as the Maori, the national obsession of Rugby, and the many adventure activities (like bungee jumping, which originated outside Queenstown) that people often associate with the country.
Experiential sidebars abound, including one on how to live and work on an organic farm, one on the hidden corners of the country where you can spot a real Kiwi bird, and another on places to learn to surf. The book also features guided drives and hikes through some of the land's most spectacular natural scenery. Whether you're checking out the subterranean glowworms at Waitomo Caves or trekking along the famous Milford Track, this guide has everything you need for a memorable trip.

National Geographic Traveler New Zealand 2nd Edition Peter Turner Colin Monteath 9781426211614 Books Reviews
- My sister and I were in NZ for five weeks...
We used this book with some augmentation from other sources.>It was great!
We used this book to plan the trip and then used it when we were there. We both liked the book and are glad we used it..Much better than the other books we had looked at - Would not recommend this book to anyone traveling to New Zealand. Specifically, don't buy this book if you're looking for detailed, up-to-date recommendations on things to do and see, or places to stay and eat in New Zealand. We bought this book and the 2017 Lonely Planet book for a trip to New Zealand, and found - many - times that the National Geographic book was simply incorrect or inaccurate for information about places to go, things to see and do, and restaurants/cafes. It had so much faulty information that by the end of the trip it was at the bottom of our checked luggage, as it was so unreliable and useless. It was almost as if it was written two decades ago, was not fact checked, and has never been updated. The Lonely Planet travel guide was much, much better - accurate, helpful, and sufficiently detailed to guide our trip. We would recommend that over this National Geographic guide many times over.
The only reason that we give this book 2 stars is because it has good background information about New Zealand - its natural history, the Maori people, etc. - and because it has lovely photos and is beautifully laid out - very visually appealing. Other than that, not helpful. - A very disappointing guide. I expected some references to the natural beauty of New Zealand. This book is almost 100% advertising for tourist traps. Extremely disappointing product from National Geographic. Actually terrible!
- Took this on our 2-week journey and found it to be quite an enjoyable read (as other reviewers mention, it contains a lot of facts/history of the regions, which I found helped me to gain further insight into the beautiful landscapes and cities we were seeing. Of course, it does also contain a lot of details on things to do in the different regions of both islands. I don't think this is a standalone book, however, and so for a complete list of sights to see & restaurants, etc. to visit, you should couple it with (I would recommend) internet resources. I didn't actually do too much pre-planning on our trip, but I would have loved to use this book ahead of time as well to help anticipate our travels.
- Good book. Our friends used a copy to plan their trip & recommended it. We're using it now to plan our trip.
- was a good general planning guide, although some of the recommended "tourist" type sights were too commercial. Overall, glad I read it before our trip.
- This is a good orientating book for the new traveler to NZ. However, it does not provide the details you often see in travel guides (e.g., phone number for lodging or where to eat). Accordingly, you still need on of the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide for those details.
- This book is very informative. Gives us an amazing amount of what to expect, where to go, and how to get there!!!
