Every time I learn this, the truer it gets We can only live our lives looking ahead, and we can only understand them looking back. So says Buddy Hinton, the protagonist of Kee Sloan’s mesmerizing debut novel. Growing up in rural Mississippi just a couple of miles from the Mississippi River, eight-year-old Buddy spends his summers playing in the woods behind his neighborhood. The day Buddy spots a wounded deer in those woods, he is wholly unprepared for a chance meeting with a stranger who will shape the course of his life. Jake—fisherman, ex-convict, former tent preacher—and Buddy form an unlikely bond that transcends age and race. Forged by their many conversations about life and faith, their friendship endures sorrows, celebrations, and transitions, ultimately revealing the power to heal them both.

"I thought this was going to be a coming of age story that might appeal to my teenage son, but it was so much more. It spoke to true love, not sex or fluffy romance. It spoke to truly understanding and overcoming racial prejudice. It spoke to faith, the meaning of faith, the loss of faith, and the struggle to regain faith. This book is a must read for all!"

  • I cried and laughed and cried again. The loving God I known shines clearly all thru this "story". I am reminded of story of God being asked what he valued most in His creation. He replied "a sense of humor. It makes me sad that the people who claim they love me seem to lack it". This book is about people who do love God and show it by all their actions and words.
  • For many reasons. A story needs to be more than just very well told to be worthwhile. This one qualifies on several levels. It IS very well told, easy to read, entertaining, and enjoyable. You will find yourself involved with the characters as they present their stories. Kee Sloan is a story teller who doesn't hit you over the head with the points he wants to make. He has a gentle, easy approach to theology that is evident in this story. Again, you should read this book.
  • I thought this was going to be a coming of age story that might appeal to my teenage son, but it was so much more. It spoke to true love, not sex or fluffy romance. It spoke to truly understanding and overcoming racial prejudice. It spoke to faith, the meaning of faith, the loss of faith, and the struggle to regain faith. This book is a must read for all!
  • The book has some excellent "proverbs," but the story itself lacks verisimilitude. Jake is near-perfect, and Buddy loves him and respects him so much he seeks advice from Jake rather than his own parents, who are good and supportive people. The confrontation between Jake and the seminary professor who has been mistreating Buddy is like John Wayne facing down the crooked rancher in an old Western.
  • We watch our "hero" grow from a conscientious child to a man of strong conviction and conscience. His mentor is atypical. If you're looking for a story with humanity (with a natural amount of humor) and characters of strength and moral courage, I highly recommend it. If you're looking for the adventure found in stories of war, crime, mystery and the like - this would not make the list.

Our "hero" takes positions adverse to some pretty powerful folks, and does so with great strength and courage. He also does so with respect and no apparent contempt. He's a model from which we could all benefit.
  • The relationship between Buddy & Jake is a beautiful one...one I believe we all long to have & probably have had at some point in our lives. I love how beautifully & gently this is written. At one point, I was afraid the majority of the book would just be a situation, then a letter from Jake...I was happy to see the full story return. There are some wonderful life lessons in this book, & some lovely theological reflections. As an Episcopalian, I was as comfortable reading it as I am with our liturgy. Well done, Rev. Sloan!
  • I started this book 6 months ago and put it down after the second chapter. Then a friend of mine told me recently (through a Facebook post) that this book is a gift to give yourself. I then picked it back up and found that he was correct. This is a very spiritual book especially for my fellow Episcopalians. I highly recommend you keep going after the second chapter!
  • First of all, Kee Sloan is my bishop and a friend. He is a remarkable gentle giant. This book is no different. It has a gentle theology that mirrors Kee himself. I loved the character development of Buddy and his friend Jake. You will smile, laugh, and cry. It was the epitome of a South that is not so long past. I highly recommend this book to all Episcopaleans and anyone else who needs to restore their faith in love of one's fellow man.
