Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock Roll Editors Rolling Stone 9780743201209 Books Reviews

  • This was probably the cat's meow when it came out in 2001, but that was 16 years ago--half a generation. Rock and Roll has changed significantly since then, so why haven't the R&R gurus at Rolling Stone updated this one? If I had it to do over again, I'd find a tattered old used copy instead of buying a brand new book. I like to have a book--otherwise I'd just read the articles on Wiki.

Having said that, I would give it five stars if this was 2001--or even 2005--but we're long past those dates. The content is good, but not up-to-date.
  • When it comes to any book of this nature (A history book about a certain segment of the entertainment business) there's bound to be some omissions.I'm sure there will be reviews of this book that will dwell on that so I'm not going to.What I will say is that there is over 1100 pages in this book filled with rather small print about Rock and Roll.At least Rolling Stones version and interpretation anyways. Its mostly small histories and discography's done the way Rolling Stone has always done stuff(Think their record reviews) about an amazing amount of artist's.Are there omissions and inaccuracies?Sure there probably is.With such a rich and varied history how could there not be?Is it worth it?In my opinion and having read Rolling Stone for the last 44 years I would say yes. This is the kind of book that you can pick up and just turn to any page and if you love this form of music you can always find something interesting to read. Now the downside.I got it used and real cheap so I'm not going to complain about a couple of torn pages other than to say the pages are extremely thin and you wouldn't want your young kids or neglectful friends pawing through it.The main gripe I have thou is the font it's sort of small and when I'm tired sort of hard to see.All in all thou it's a fine book just look for a deal.A good reference tool
  • if you love music (and who doesn't) then knowing who wrote it, who sings it, who plays what instrument, what other discs are available. etc., etc.... is a "must" for the avid fan, and this book does a "pretty good" job of providing a lot of those answers. the only problem i have (okay, make it 2 problems) is 1.) the info becomes incomplete so quickly. this book is only as current as 2005; and 2.) i find the reviewing critics at "rolling stone magazine" to be sort of pretentious, elitist and kind of snobbish. our attitudes on what's "great" or what is "mediocre" seem to conflict more often than not. (so call me a pretentious, elitist snob . . .) all-in-all, it's packed with a ton of the "who's-who" info you crave!
  • Got this for a brother in law and we didn’t see his face again for hours. Completely lost himself in memories and forgotten facts. If you or someone you know fancies them self a true music fan, you simply cannot go wrong with this
  • This was not what I EXPECTED. Always check the date of when it printed. It is constantly updated. The info I needed was not in this.
  • my 12 year old really loves this book, so if you have a kid who loves music he/she may enjoy it. it is the only book he has taken out of the library that he wanted to buy.
  • Great book! Was delivered in excellent condition
  • My friend, Jimi, needed the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of R&R to complete his music reference library. All the book stores he checked reported, not in stock, not on order, not available for back order, & no longer in print. Jimi had given up on ever getting ahold of the book until he opened the Christmas package I sent him.

The book arrived in a timely manner. The tracking log is a great feature. The book was in mint condition. Great care was taken in packing for shipment.

made Christmas a joyous holiday for both Jimi & myself.
