A pioneering work on early childhood development that is as relevant today as when it was first published 60 years ago.
To a small child, the world is an exciting but sometimes frightening and unstable place. In The Magic Years, Selma Fraiberg takes the reader into the mind of the child, showing how he confronts the world and learns to cope with it. With great warmth and perception, she discusses the problems at each stage of development and reveals the qualities—above all, the quality of understanding—that can provide the right answer at critical moments.

"I love this book and I give it as a gift to many new parents. I used it when I was parenting a small child and found it very useful for understanding how the children in the years 0-7 see the world. It helps to know what's going on in their little brains in deciding how to react, support them, etc."

- Bought this on the recommendation of a pediatric nurse practitioner. It's an insightful and fun read. But, it was originally published in 1959, and while the copyright has been updated, some information has not (reference emerging sexuality). Overall, a book we keep at hand to read up on what's going in those babies heads and how to better manage that particular stage of growing.
- What's not to like? It's an established classic in the field of child development. If you are having children, you ought to have a copy.. and read it, understand it, hang onto it for reference. It's great being able to understand what the child is experiencing amidst the cooing, crying, and cute and crazy facial expressions.
- Wow, i'm going to read this book every 6 months as my little one grows. It was written in the 50's but is just as relevant today. Describes the stages of learning and development for children from ages 0 to six years in clear, user friendly, non-clinical terms. Explains the world through the eyes of the child and why, for example, one day they smile at everyone and the next they cry at unfamiliar faces. Fascinating.
Also gives practical tips on how to handle some of the classic developmental bumps for children, e.g., "Do we let them cry or go in and pick them up?" Highly recommend this book. - I recently ordered this as a gift for my son and his wife. They are brand new parents and they are fascinated by the baby's development from week to week. In its day, this was a well-respected book about early child development. I have no idea how it is regarded by child psychologists today. When I first read the book as a new mother, Dr. Fraiberg captured and explained the "magic" of these years for me. Perhaps, we now know even more or different explanations of what is occurring, but it is still worth reading this.
- I initially read this book many years ago in a college Child Development class. While it is NOT a text book, it was very effective in helping to look into the mind of a child. I read it again when my daughter was young and it proved to be essential in helping get through some difficult situations. I purchased it again as a gift for some friends who are parents of an almost three year old. I know they'll get some help from it as well. Essentially, it helps to understand that small children's minds don't work as ours do, and what solutions can be most effective during times of night terrors and such. It's a practical book to meet the challenges of practical parenting.
- I had this book as one of my college textbooks for child psychology, and used it when my children were toddlers. I have also gifted my children with this wonderful book as they have their own children now. Very good at getting into a toddler's mind.
- I love this book and I give it as a gift to many new parents. I used it when I was parenting a small child and found it very useful for understanding how the children in the years 0-7 see the world. It helps to know what's going on in their little brains in deciding how to react, support them, etc.
- Being a new mum with post natal depression I had excessive anxiety of not being good enough for my child. This book opens up a new perspective that I don't have to be the perfect parent. A very accessible book to a wealth of knowledge on children psychology.
